Great memories of McDimples. Would go dancing there with my girlfriends and went on my first date with my husband to McDimples in July 1972. We’re married 42 years.
Went dancing at Zeros on the North shore off Rt 25 Oyster Bay back then too.

Phase II…..I believe was on Queens Blvd. First time I was ever allowed to go to a club. My parents allowed me to go because Lisa Lisa was performing her song which had recently come out “I Wonder If I Take You Home”. I know it the club had several different names after that. But it was… Phase II… for a while. (it was 1985 and I was 18 although the drinking age had just been raised to 19 in NY for one year before being rasied to 21).

  22. While you folks remember clubs and bars from what I, as a sexagenarian, think of as the recent past, does anyone possess any photos of Cold Spring Harbor’s “Joe’s King Neptune” or “The Moorings?” As what was once a functioning shell fishing and motorboat service dock has been replaced by a sterile park named for someone completely unrelated to CSH except for naming an album after the place, it would be good to see photos of H & M Powles, Joe’s and The Moorings. Let’s see if “crowd sourcing” works as well as advertised??

I hung out there in 1969 when I was stationed at Governors Island in the Coast Guard and remember it having great live bands and great people hanging out there. Mr. Gilday would give me a free beer from time to time because I was in the military. I think he told me he had 2 sons in the navy at the time. I have no clue why it would have a bad rep as I never saw anything but people having a good time.

Anybody remember the name of the club that was in the corner a shopping center in Plainview NY on South Oyster Bay Rd north of Woodbury Road that eventually became a Lucille Robert’s fitness center (next to Christiano’s). I’m thinking it was something it was something like My Mother’s Place

Dennis, the only club I frequented in Plainview anywhere near Oyster Bay and Woodbury Rds was MONROES. We AOLers from the L.I Over 40 chatroom hung out there every Friday. The ladies were all over Dotties brother Clark, when he visited from California.. He was so hot, they called him CLARK KENT!

Met my wife at “The Gardens” , use to go there 4 nights a week. The band back in 67 – 68 was the Younger Society. My crowd hung out at the front near the stage Gerry was the owner and had a picture of himself hanging in the dance area and the bouncers were all from St Johns

Community Gardens was great. I used to go there between 1966 and 1970. Met my wife there also. Gerry, a former boxer, was the owner, and I remember his brother Kevin was always “prowling” around. Two great guys. I remember the bouncers and bartenders as being real friendly. I went whenever I could, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays too. Along with The Younger Society (Original lead singer Gerry Milan then replaced by George ?, I also remember The Rubber Band and The Strangers as being local bands that played there regularly there. I used to shoot pool upstairs then go downstairs to The Gardens to dance the night away. When it got too crowded, I’d go up the block to Kelly’s. Although smaller, it was also a great place to hang out and listen to live music.

Anyone remember the Menemsha Bar, on the ground floor of the Allerton Hotel for Women, E.57th St, corner Lexington. It was decorated a la Martha’s Vineyard locale, and periodically a rain squall would descend around the perimeter, with sounds of thunder and seagulls. This was back in the late 1950s. It’s now a Marriott Renaissance Hotel.

I remember Ryan’s during the late 50s when I was in college. It was always very crowded and there was a line outside on weekends, especially Friday night. . It was dimly lit and you had to fight to get a drink at the bar. I seem to remember Zolie’s was close by, maybe half a mile to the east of Ryan’s if memory serves me. I loved coming back to NY over the summers and liked the idea that I could drink legally at age 18 vs 21 in PA, not that there was any shortage of alcohol and girls at Penn State in the late 50s and early 60s. What were the approximate street addresses of Ryan’s and Zolie’s?

Community Gardens, 215th st, Jamaica Ave, Queens Village NY was the dance bar in the 60’s that all the kids from Queens Village and beyond would go to on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.. As a former movie theater it was huge!. I remember seeing Frankie Limone and the Teenagers there in the early 60’s. In fact, I saw one of the kids punch out Frankie over an argument!
What a great dance hall I met most of my dates there from 1962-66.One of my best friends (Steve the Fenda Benda) was on of the bouncers. Fights broke out a least once a week; but back then only fist fights. The most popular dance ten was the Slop.

Most of the guys who went there had phoney draft cards. I don’t know hat the girls used to get in. Back then in NY, you could drink legally at 18.

What a great place to meet girls!

Barkers was on the East Side of Deer Park ave in N. Babylon; had the best OVER 30’S night on Thursdays! Id drive over from Nassau County’s NORTH shore, take me an hour to get there. Jimmy the bartender lived above P & G’s Pub in New Paltz, but would DRIVE down to work Barkers Thur nights, cause the tips were so good. Nothing like that upstate. and he would stay overnight at his moms house.

If ever you were depressed, Just go to the Stratton, you’d be sure to meet someone. LOL. Went to the Chariot in Forest Hills and I met someone had to be about 35 I thought that was just so old. LOL. I would have forgotton all about the Chariot. Thanks for the memory. What about Pan Am on Queens Blvd.

Don’t know if this conversation is still going, but I’m trying to remember the name of a dance club that was on Route 347 in Stony Brook – I think in the space that occupied the Mad Hatter. Does anyone remember that?? It was in a strip mall shopping center with the movie theatre and bowling alley. I’m going crazy trying to remember the name!!!! (Like Chevy’s I think it had part of a car protruding above the entryway…)

Not sure if youre talking about WALL STREET on 347 and Nesconsit Hwy, but thats close to the place you were asking about. Gorgeous Matt from CHELSEA Street -Savannah – (now Aura) in East Meadow also tended bar there, and BUBBA STILL tends bar both at AURA and Churchills in RVC. Bubba claims to have worked with the bartender at OBI who invented the L.I. I was a bit OLDER than the crowd then, and had just gotten off work as a policeman (in civilian clothing). The Enchanted Garden was on the grounds of the Douglaston golf course, and managed by Steve Rubell and Ian Schaeger, who later went on to open Club 54. Beautiful place. I had the great honor of getting fired by Steve ——-gee thanks.

Don’t forget the “Top Hat” it was a strip club in island Park, it took over the old Mama Leone’s Italian food restaurant. It was on Long Beach road behind Hills supermarket. The supermarket is now Ace Costello hardware, the club and former Italian restaurant is now a cooperative apartment structure. Unfortunately the Abby manor, housing the mentally ill, is still there near the railroad tracks. The best deli in town was Rhodes deli right there on Long Beach road near the fire department. Island Park was the place to be 30 years ago. It’s gone to s***, it is now considered to be the town, island Park new york, with the highest rate of opioid addiction. More than massapequa and bethpage combined. Good Lord how things change!

Hi everybody! I am trying to remember the name of the disco I use to DJ at back in the early 80’s. It was in the Farmingdale/Babylon area. May have been on route 110 or route 109. The building was close to the street, entrance was facing the street. As you walked in the coat check was to your left, the DJ booth was right behind it. As you walked in, the raised lit dancefloor was in front of you, a little to the left. There were 2 LONG bars, one on the right side going from the front of the building to practically the back wall and the other bar was on the left wall, kind of like the same or twin bars. I remember one night the place was super hopping, the dancefloor was packed and I blew out one of the speakers which were big and there was one positioned at each corner of the dancefloor. During the week I attempted to repair it and then the next Friday night, again with a packed dancefloor, the speaker went on fire. Maybe one of you remember that. Had to emergency shut down the entire sound system. Real bummer, but I simply disconnected the speaker and went on rocking. If any of you know the name of this place please post it. This has been on my mind for a very long time. Thanks!

        Hi Mike,
The more I think about it the more I think you nailed it. “ANVINE” Do you recall if there was a Deli of some sort right across the street? I remember this because I had gone there a few times to get something to eat. ANVINE was a strange name for a Disco back then which caused me to never remember it, even when I worked there back then. Thanks for the memory refresh!! Stay safe.

        Thanks,

Hey Ray, Could it have been Club 110 Disco/Harry O’s? This place was a 2-in-1 spot for dancing, eating and just hanging out in a pub atmosphere, hence Harry O’s. It was located right on Route 110 in Farmingdale not too far from the college. It was opened around 1983, and many of us who worked at Fairchild Republic Co. down the street would go there on Friday nights. It didn’t stay in business for too long, but I think the Club 110 side had the type of raised and lit dance floor you’re talking about. Great music, food and drinks, and people too! What I would give to go back to those days!

Anyone remember The Quad located in the Huntington Quadrangle lower level off Route 110 in Melville, NY? It had a big dance floor and a nice big bar. Music was good and this place would really start rocking after 8:00 pm on Friday nights. Also, Fulton Street, off Conklin Street in Farmingdale. Smaller dance floor, but this place played great music and had great bar service and drinks. If you worked at Fairchild Republic, you probably knew this pub as a go-to spot to dance, eat and drink! Also again, the 56th Fighter Group had a nice dance floor and the DJ would take requests in a leather Army bag that got hoisted up to the DJ’s booth. They played great music and I always remember the dance floor jumping! The restaurant area served an English menu of popular dishes. The decor was a WW!! theme complete with memorabilia from back in that time period. Bar service was always good with a nice selection of popular drinks. All these places offered an opportunity to meet some great people and get together with friends for some good times!

56th Fighter squadron @ Republic Airport in Farmingdale was such fun. It was like a bombed out, old English farmhouse, with walls and roofs missing. I remember crossing a bridge w a jeep in front to get to the building, entering thru the SAND BAG bunker, and hearing WINSTON CHURCHILL speeches in the Men’s room. I always enjoyed taking my Uncles who were in WW2 or Korea there; they really got a kick out of it. Mike
