Does anyone recall GREAT EASTERN? I believe this department store was on Northern Boulevard near Roslyn, NY and down the road from CW Post campus. Although I have no specific memories of the store, I do recall that my family used to go there on occasion.

  17. I remember a movie cinema on jamaica ave and 220 st. In queens village. I remember the beatles did a concert there in the 1960s. Is this just a hallucination from my past, could someone confirm this for me.

  18. Bill

     /  July 13, 2013

You are correct Julie. I go past that area on occasion. I don’t remember the name but it closed about 15 years ago. After standing abandoned for a number of years they partially knocked it down, rebuilt some of it and today it is some sort of church. About three years prior to closing the movie house like many in New York that are on the verge of closing showed XXX films. Glad I could be of assistance.

Nancy, yes – there are still Dairy Barns on Long Island. In West Babylon on Little East Neck Rd, and in Deer Park on Deer Park Avenue to name just two!

    • Patricia,

The one on Deer Park Ave is now called The Barn and is owned by a different company than Dairy Barn. I don’t know for sure what the Little East Neck Road one is, but Dairy Barns website says its not a Dairy Barn.

does anyone remember the name of the ladies clothing store in the original Herricks Shopping Center in New Hyde Park, NY?(1955ish)

  27. Bill

     /  February 28, 2014

I don’t remember a ladies clothing store there. I do remember the A&P on the corner , now a RiteAid and there was a Jahns ice cream parlour there that we used to go to and order a kitchen sink. .

  28. deloresc

     /  February 28, 2014

The A and P was not on the corner. There was a drug store on the corner, then the A and P, then the card store, next a delli, then Danish Maid ( a bakery), an open air fruit market(Smiley’s) which became Trunz meats, then National Shoes, then Woolworth, then Beau Geste Cleaners, Then Bo Peep (kiddie store) a ladies store, Jahn’s and then Grand Union.
I might be off on the exact order of things… These were the original stores when the shopping center opened in around 1954or 1955ish

  29. Bill

     /  February 28, 2014

Robert Hall was located in the shopping plaza on Route 111 where it turns at the Commack HS. Robert Hall was the entire plaza then. It was broken up into several stores. One of the stores is an Italian eatery now. (I don’t know the name.) It is across from the back of Shoprite.
(There was a discount clothing store in the Shoprite plaza called Robbins that later became a Mid-Island Department Stores. Across from the old Pizza Hut.)

There was a used record store in Hicksville located in an old hamburger joint (a Weston’s?) on Old Country Road where Levittown Pkwy ended.
    Anyone remember the name?

Gosh, I used to go past it every day for a year when I worked in Hisksville but for the life of me can’t remember the name. Sorry Dave.

    • I believe the record store was called Titus Oaks. I remember them for their roach problem. When they closed the creepy clerk moved on to work at Mr Cheapos in Mineola. The previous burger place was indeed a Wetsons.

Can anyone tell me the name of a dress/gown store that was I. Valley Stream, N.Y.? It was owned by two sisters n was a big store front near the rail road I think. My mother used to take me there when I was young. I think one of the sisters name was Kathleen? There was always one sister in the back by the gowns. They were the nices ladies. I’m sure the store is not there anymore. I’m thinking this was the 70’s, 80’s early 90’s. Thank you for any help anyone can give me.

Does anyone remember the name of the fine dining restaurant on Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY in the Americana Shopping Center which had long bar to the left when you walked in and just a few tables right up along the front windows so you could look out
while you had Sunday brunch or lunch during the week? (All of we patrons wanted those front tables with the view!) The restaurant was narrow, but deep and the restrooms were in the rear to the left of the seating. I used to dine there often in the late 1990s, very early 2000s. I think it might be the Cipollini’s Restaurant now. Wanted to know as I had a flash memory today of my beloved Mom who passed away almost ten years ago. I recall taking her to this restaurant a couple of times when she came out from the City and how much she loved the restaurant’s ambiance and food. We had such nice mother-daughter times there, wonderful memories. Would like to place the name of the restaurant with my memories.
Thank you and remember to tell your mother how much you love her; give her a big hug and kiss. I wish I could…

Yes! It was Millie’s Place. What a gem, wonderful memories. So sorry it closed. Do you know why or was it the usual, “the landlord upped the lease/rent”?

I remember Millie’s Place. Never went in though. In those days it was too rich for my blood. Wish it was still there. On second thought it would probably still, more than likely, be too rich for my blood.

Anyone remember a quiet Chinese restaurant on Plandome Rd in Manhasset across from
    Gino’s Pizza??

    • Bill

       /  August 28, 2018

Can not recall the name of that quiet Chinese restaurant on Plandome rd but it was along a few of the storefronts (including Manhasset Video during the age of the VHS tape/Blockbuster era) next to Young’s Liquors which is today still there. All of these stores opened to the shared parking lot through the back of the stores. The local hardware & general store Raindew expanded and took over the space.

Cippolini’s in the Americana is in the location that once housed a Jahn’s ice cream shop. This from back in the day when the Americana also had a Waldbaum’s supermarket down at the Searingtown Rd end of the shopping center, where Brooks Brothers is located today. Now everything in the Americana is much more upscale – it is largely Madison Avenue translated and accessible to NYC’s suburbs of the North Shore Nassau County.

Do you have any interior/exterior photos of Long Island Brewing formerly in Jericho around 1994-2000?

    • Bill V

       /  November 5, 2018

Never heard of Long Island Brewing. I guess I’m not or wasn’t a big beer drinker.
I was wondering if anyone would have pictures of the pier or the two floats that were at Bar Beach in Port Washington/Roslyn in the 1950’s and 1960’s. I have exhausted all the historic sites on the internet looking for what Bar Beach looked like in the “good old days” to no avail. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In the 1960’s there were two Sporting Goods stores on Rockaway Ave. in Valley Stream. Does anyone remember the names of either store ? I’m guessing one was Sportel’s. Rockaway Ave. was VS’s downtown area- there were bakeries, florists, banks, movie theater, pizzas, drug stores, offices, barber shops, hair salons, liquor stores, Woolworth’s, luncheonettes, candy stores, etc.

I have not seen any photos of Ryan’s Bar on Hillside Avenue in Hollis between Francis Lewis Blvd and 205th Street that closed sometime in this century. And none from Herby’s Bar on the Queens Village side on 211th Street and Hillside. Would be interesting to see photos on either.
